Abstract

This paper presents an extended “thought experiment” regarding a not yet existent systems application: the “pedagogical twin.”  Studying plausible future technologies creates a conceptual artifact and represents a way to consider a range of use cases and design alternatives.  Futures studies illuminates possible future states in order to clarify how we value them and engineer regulations and guardrails to realize benefits while limiting risks and damage.  This paper examines risk from through the lens of identified IT concerns using Mason’s (1986) PAPA ethical framework to discuss the applicability of these to logical concerns stemming from instantiation of a pedagogical twin.  It also identifies issues for young people (human twins) relative to digital exposure, mostly social media, particularly suggesting that these may provide starter prescriptions for constraining the design and development through the many intermediate steps needed prior to full realization.  Additionally, Vallor’s framework for virtue ethics highlights a mindset appropriate to guidance of the pedagogical twin project.  Her studies identify virtues particularly likely to be tested, the equivocality of each virtue, and the underlying bedrock importance of wisdom and courage to real life challenges.  This paper proposes next steps for the “pedagogical twin”.
