Abstract
The study examines the applicability of Self-Determination Theory (SDT) in understanding student engagement in physical and Metaverse-based classrooms. The psychological demands of autonomy, relatedness, and competence, as defined by SDT theory, have been examined in traditional or physical classrooms, but their relevance in the Metaverse classroom remains unexplored. To address this gap, we conducted a comparative survey among MBA students attending both physical and Metaverse classes. Our findings reveal differences in how the SDT-based psychological needs influence the agentic, behavioral, cognitive, and emotional engagement across physical and Metaverse classes. Our results challenge the assumption that SDT applies uniformly across contexts, providing new insights into how motivation-related constructs function in digital learning environments. The study contributes to the literature on digital education, highlighting the need to adapt motivational theories to the Metaverse classroom.
