Abstract
Driven by the extensive penetration of digital innovation across contexts, the notion of digital platform ecosystems (DPEs) is growing in popularity in research and business practice alike. However, given the complexity of DPEs in today’s business world, there is currently a limited understanding of their most relevant characteristics and holistic form. Based on rigorous taxonomy development and evaluation methods, we present a structuring classification system for DPEs. This taxonomy of DPEs consists of nine important dimensions and is based on DPE instances that have been intensely researched in the information systems (IS) literature. Applying cluster analysis to an enlarged set of real-world DPEs classified by the taxonomy, we derive five distinct DPE archetypes. Our work contributes to the DPE-related IS research community – which has not, to date, differentiated DPEs and has employed only a selective focus on particular dimensions – by providing an anchor for DPE characterisation and understanding. Moreover, the taxonomy assists business practitioners concerned with analysing and designing DPEs by providing conceptual tooling and potential design options.
