Abstract

With increased attention to the need for purposeful digital transformation in higher education (HE), fueled by Industry 4.0 technologies such as AI, we released a call for papers in late 2024 that welcomed submissions exploring the digital transformation of teaching and learning in HE. The call specifically drew attention to pedagogical innovation in an evolving socio-technical higher education setting, focusing on the role of information systems (IS) academics and practitioners in influencing, guiding and leading the transformation to Education 4.0. There was a significant response from the academic community, culminating in 12 special issue papers that address various facets of pedagogical innovation and transformation. This Guest Editorial introduces the background and motivation behind the special issue, explores the importance of pedagogical innovation within the Education 4.0 framework, provides an overview of the articles, offers an Editorial reflection highlighting prominent themes, and presents avenues for future research.
