Abstract
As industry demands increasingly call for technical expertise, information systems (IS) education faces the pressure to equip students with the necessary technical skills. However, many students struggle with these topics, calling for innovative learning support for skill development. This paper explores the development of a large language model (LLM)-based pedagogical conversational agent (PCA) designed to support IS students in acquiring necessary technical expertise, using declarative process modeling (DPM) as a representative case. Following the principles of design science research (DSR), we developed EduClare, a tutoring chatbot enabling users to learn about the DPM language Declare. Across multiple design iterations, we gathered student feedback and interaction data to collect qualitative insights. Based on the findings, we formulated design principles (DPs) for building PCAs to support technical skill development for IS students through personalized learning paths and effective learning support. Our findings demonstrate insight into designing effective educational technologies providing additional learning support for students beyond classroom settings.
