Abstract
Generative AI technologies are rapidly advancing and gaining popularity across various disciplines. Beyond routine tasks, there is a growing interest in exploring their potential for creative endeavors. As human–AI collaboration becomes more prevalent, there is an increasing need for guidance on designing AI systems that support creative tasks. Particularly underexamined is their use among children, a critical demographic in the literature. To that end, this study investigates how generative AI can be designed to enhance parent–child creative collaboration. Drawing upon theories of parental mediation, self-determination, and Vygotsky’s zone of proximal development, we propose five core design principles aimed at promoting children’s development in collaborative AI environments: augmentability, automizability, authenticity, adaptability, and accountability. We also instantiate the design principles in a prototype of an AI-augmented parent–child story co-creation system and evaluate it using in-depth interviews for further refinement. These principles and the prototype are intended to inform design choices in similar parent–child creative activities, as well as in broader human–AI creative collaborations.
