Abstract
In recent years, multiple industry sectors have witnessed increased information technology (IT) platform-based competition, with large corporations relying on digital platforms, an IT artifact, to formulate their operating models. Hence, it is imperative that information systems (IS) students learn the nuances of digital platforms. This teaching case presents a fictional scenario wherein a new entrant, Fox Inc., introduces an integrated platform to seamlessly provision and operate smart home automation. The case also discusses the moves and countermoves of the other platform players. Students will analyze the case from multiple perspectives (e.g., platform sponsors, complementors, and rivals) in a digital platform ecosystem. The scenario described in this case applies to many emerging areas (e.g., metaverse, circular economy, and GenAI platforms) that rely on digital platforms for their operations. This case will help students understand the role of IT and competitive strategies in shaping the digital platform industry.
