Abstract

To foster their integration into society, it is crucial for speech-impaired individuals to have Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems that enable effective communication across diverse daily situations. However, current AAC systems often lack personalization, leading to interactions that can feel impersonal and less emotionally engaging. This research addresses this gap by introducing a Digital Persona – a virtual representation of the user’s personality traits – using Generative AI. Powered by GPT-4.0, the Digital Persona generates personality-driven utterances tailored to the user’s unique communication style, aiming to create interactions that feel more authentic and emotionally resonant. To guide the design, development, and evaluation of the Digital Persona, a Design Science Research (DSR) approach is applied. This structured approach not only ensures rigorous development but also focuses on enhancing social integration and quality of life for individuals with speech impairments by creating interactions that are more natural and individualized.
