Abstract
This paper conducts a methodological replication of the Harden, Boakye, and Ryan (2018) study on information technology professional turnover using the lens of social exchange theory. The original study investigated the relationships between perceived workload, perceived work obsolescence, and fairness of rewards with organizational commitment and turnover intention using a sample of 800 information technologists from a large federal task force. The results from 93 IT professionals in an industry-based sample of this methodological replication were mixed. Perceived work overload was not supported by organizational commitment nor turnover intention. Perceived skill obsolescence and fairness of rewards relationships were also not supported as predictors of turnover intention. However, their relationship to organizational commitment was supported. The relationship between organizational commitment and turnover intention was supported. Current technological advances and the sample likely contributed to the change in the conclusions. Researchers should explore the factors contributing to differences between industry and federal employees.
