Abstract

The field of futures studies involves systematic analysis of how our world may change in the years and decades to come. As such, it can offer much to the IS discipline, orientating researchers towards longer-term horizons and building resilience to change even if, inevitably, one cannot predict the future exactly. Futures studies and IS might seem an awkward disciplinary mix, with temporal directions and epistemologies that appear at odds. In truth the gap is not so substantial: good futures work is no mere speculation but instead grounded in empirical evidence, while IS research can be imaginative and future-leaning. To introduce this special issue of CAIS we examine foundational work at the intersection of futures studies and IS. We then introduce our selected papers and their novel interpretations of this space. After outlining areas for further exploration, we urge IS researchers and practitioners to explore futures mentalities and methods, not just for the domain’s good but for broader social benefit.
