Abstract

This study examines the impact of IT implementation announcement framing on user stress and behavior during the pre-implementation phase, specifically within the context of Big Data Analytics (BDA). Utilizing the transactional theory of stress, we assess how one-sided (predominantly positive) and two-sided (balanced) framing styles, along with the perceived riskiness of announcements, shape perceptions of IT systems. An experimental vignette methodology involving 150 data analysts reveals that one-sided announcements significantly increase challenge stress, which in turn reduces resistance to IT implementation and enhances motivation to learn new IT skills, while announcements’ riskiness increases hindrance stress, which heightens resistance. Psychological capital further strengthens the relationship between hindrance stress and resistance to IT implementation. These results indicate that announcement framing shapes distinct stress appraisals that drive both positive and negative user behaviors. By focusing on the pre-implementation phase, this study highlights critical early interactions that shape user perceptions toward new technology, offering theoretical insights and practical guidance for managers on how strategic communication and psychological factors influence the adoption of complex IT systems like BDA.
