Abstract

This research evaluates gender differences in Information Systems (IS) research among the Senior Scholars’ Basket of 8 (SB8). Using an archival research method, we collect and analyze all research publications over the first two decades of the 21st century to assess gender differences in research publications and the representativeness of women in IS research. Our analysis reviews 5,080 published articles, 5,606 unique authors, and 13,692 author listings in the journal list. Findings reveal that women comprise 26.85 percent of unique authors, which is representative of the field of IS, reported at 28 percent. The quantity of publications differs with men significantly outperforming women (23.13 percent of all author listings). Furthermore, only 14 women appear on the top 100 scholars in the field of IS over the two-decade period. While women are proportionately represented in the field of IS, they are underrepresented at the highest levels of research productivity. The findings call for further investigation into the causes of these disparities and suggest that increased mentorship and networking opportunities for women may help address the gap in research output. We conclude with insights and recommendations for future research and advancing gender equity in the field of IS.
