Abstract
In December 2023, a panel on the diverse histories of computing and information in Australasia was held at the Australasian Conference on Information Systems. To date little has been written about the history of computing and information in this region, and even less about the significant contributions made by innovators, entrepreneurs, women, immigrants and indigenous people. Women, immigrants and indigenous people, in particular, have been systematically underrepresented both in the information technology sector itself and in historical research. The panel addressed this issue by telling the stories of these important participants. Though each of the different groups had unique features the panel identified three themes that made a critical contribution to their ongoing inclusion in the computing sector. These themes were education, innovation and diversity. Our discussions around these three themes offer a starting point to unpack the issues preventing a more representative participation in information technology across Australasia.
