Abstract

This study is a conceptual replication of the work of Zaitsev et al. (2020), in which they evaluated an agile software development project in Australia and, based on the coordination theory, structured a framework that specifies the primary coordination challenges that can arise throughout this kind of project. We studied an agile software development project in Brazil, followed the same procedures to assess the original model, and compared our results with the original paper. While the original article analyzed two medium-sized companies, the replication study focused on two departments within a large consultancy firm, leading to differing coordination needs and challenges. This replication study confirms that the original framework is stable and applicable to technical and cultural contexts over time. We also corroborated the proposed dimensions of the artifacts, such as their richness (ability to hold high-fidelity information) and mutability (capacity for change). These results generate valuable insights about the coordination artifacts to be used throughout the development of agile projects and their ability to facilitate coordination.
