Abstract

This study explores what affects the formation of the information technology (IT) identity of individuals and how such an IT identity influences their digital performance in digital work. It is built on the development of a conceptual framework within the background of the IT identity theory through a comprehensive review of the related literature. Such a framework is tested and validated using structural equation modeling of the survey data from Australia. The study finds that rewards and digital experience have significant influence on IT identity while digital embeddedness and digital self-efficacy are insignificant to the formation of IT identity. Furthermore, the study discovers that IT identity significantly influences both digitally enabled in-role and innovative job performance. This study enhances the understanding of the formation of IT identity and its impact on digital performance in digital work in the evolving landscape of the “new normal” working environment and offers a validated framework for further investigation into digital work practices.
