Abstract

While applauding Richardson et al.’s (2021) efforts to draw attention to ethical considerations that arise in developing and deploying BDA-based systems, we critique their work in order to further discussion on these important themes. We point to the distinction between BDA-based systems and AI-based systems; the extant, related IS literature concerning ethical issues; whether extending established frameworks may actually weaken the IS discipline’s contribution; privacy considerations; regulatory requirements; and ethical design considerations.
