Description
While digital sharing platforms are praised for their contribution towards sustainability, they also create paradoxes and tensions which can influence sustainability outcomes. Therefore, this study aims to examine the sustainability potential of digital platforms by particularly focusing on Food Waste Sharing platforms. Accordingly, this paper examines the platforms’ business models by focusing on the mechanisms of value creation, capture, and delivery. Also, it looks at the role of user engagement in value co-creation and co-destruction and examines the factors that influence the tension between these two processes, and how such tension leads to paradoxical sustainability outcomes. This study will thus contribute to the current debate on sustainability and digital sharing platforms. Findings will provide platform founders and new entrants with useful insights into the sustainability phenomena associated with their platforms, and direct them to devise suitable solutions to improve the sustainability outcomes of their business model.
