Abstract
Blockchain technology is playing an increasingly important role in modern business. We aim to understand how competitive pressure and industry type influence firms’ Blockchain technology innovations. Based on competitive rivalry-based theories, we proposed that competitors’ Blockchain innovations will increase the likelihood of the focal firm’s Blockchain innovations. We also proposed that service firms are more likely to invest in Blockchain innovation than manufacturing firms, and the industry type served as a moderator for the impact of competitors’ Blockchain innovations on focal firm’s Blockchain innovations. We empirically examine the proposed research model with Blockchain-related technology patents data from 2001 to 2021 and financial data of the involved firms. Results from survival analysis offered theoretical insights into the Blockchain innovation competition and provide firms with suggestions on Blockchain innovations.
