PACIS 2020 Proceedings

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the boundary between the physical and virtual world by studying employee interaction with IT artifacts that use natural language to perform tasks, namely intelligent employee assistants (IEAs). IEAs are new to the workplace and there is little empirical evidence demonstrating that they increase work efficiency, yet they have the potential to disrupt employee task performance. Through interviews of employees who are using IEAs in various sectors, this paper seeks to investigate the physical and virtual boundary between employees and IEAs. This research will investigate the interactions across the physical and virtual boundaries of employees interacting with IEAs and will build on the boundary spanning theory to develop a research model to study how employees span this digital divide.
