Abstract
This study proposed an activity competency model (ACM) to investigate the perceived importance of managerial activities and skills/knowledge required of three levels of information system (IS) managers from three types of industries. A survey instrument was designed based on the ACM for data collection that encompasses twenty-one initial IS managerial activities and twelve managerial competences required to effectively perform these management activities. These activities were identified through a literature review, job analysis, and iterative personal interviews with domain experts. Our findings indicate that the importance of IS managerial activities is significantly different from the levels of management, but not significantly different from the types of industries. The results from this study have implications for management development, training, and IS management career planning. These results can also serve as guideline for recruiting the right IS managers.
