Abstract
Recent advances in information technologies provide a unique opportunity for sharing knowledge free from constraints of time and place. One application area is CMC-based learning where members of virtual groups are separated by location, and are challenged by a collaborative project. In this research we investigate how trust develop and evolve in the virtual group. Twenty-five groups in a cyber- university participate in the study. Our preliminary findings suggest the following. First, calculated-based trust, knowledge-based trust and identification-based trust emerge swiftly. Thus, virtual groups’ members initially import trust rather than develop trust. Second, calculated-based trust, knowledge-based trust and identification-based trust coexist and they evolve in the beginning, middle, and the end of semester.
