What Do IT Professionals Think About the Future of COBOL?

Abstract

This paper shows the results of a survey given to IT professionals. The results provide some insight into how IT professionals are thinking about the future direction of COBOL. Since these professionals are on the so-called “front line,” they should certainly have a good idea of what is expected to occur in their industry within the next five years. These results should provide valuable direction to academics in assisting them in their curriculum plans for the new millennium. Should the Structure approach be continued and/or supplemented with Object Oriented COBOL? Answers to questions like this and others can provide valuable insights for the academic community.
