Abstract
The widespread use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) could significantly impact agile development approaches, which emphasize human-centered collaboration to manage volatile requirements. Using socio-technical systems and agile coordination theory as analytical lens and responses from a survey of 111 agile workers, we explore how the use of AI affects agile practices and shapes project outcomes. We analyze the responses using a mixed-method approach that combines an inductive analysis with fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analyses (fsQCA). Our findings suggest that the introduction of AI has the potential to significantly change agile practices and coordination mechanisms across the entire work system. The fsQCA results indicate how the introduction of AI can influence project outcomes. While the combined introduction of AI into all parts of the work system seems to be required to achieve productivity benefits, a joint optimization of technical and social practices does not appear to be a prerequisite to realize quality benefits.
