Abstract
This study examines the role of telemedicine adoption in healthcare utilization among patients with chronic conditions. We analyze a panel dataset from an integrated health system in Southern California that examines Electronic Health Records of patients diagnosed with diabetes. Using a Difference-in-Differences approach, our findings indicate that patients who adopted telemedicine also increased their use of phone and in-person visits, highlighting the relevance of telemedicine visits as a linkage point with the healthcare system. This is especially important for those diagnosed with chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, as they need a lifelong relationship with their healthcare providers. This work contributes to understanding how telemedicine adoption affects care engagement and aims to inform healthcare providers and policymakers about the importance of addressing the barriers to telemedicine adoption as a step to expand the service delivery of the healthcare system.
