Abstract
As generative artificial intelligent tools like ChatGPT become deeply integrated into daily life, understanding how users build or lose trust in these systems is more crucial than ever. This study aims to explore how both trust and distrust, along with users’ knowledge about AI, shape engagement with ChatGPT. We analyzed Reddit conversations using grounded theory to identify patterns in user behavior. Our findings reveal three user engagement pathways—Pragmatic Adopters, Curious Explorers, and Skeptical Observers—each showing how distrust can lead to more critical and cautious use of AI, rather than outright rejection. The study highlights that distrust can play a positive role when combined with strong AI literacy and metaknowledge, offering insights into how AI tools can be better designed to support diverse user needs and build more resilient trust over time.
