Description

Online education has been brought to the forefront of the debate on the future of higher education; business school curriculum is no exception to this. For optimal curriculum design, it is imperative to investigate the subject areas that are best suited for online instruction. This research proposes a novel approach by combining large-scale online reviews for higher education with a natural experiment from the COVID-19 pandemic that forced the expansion of online course offerings across the curriculum. We present preliminary evidence that business disciplines outperformed non-business disciplines in expanding online course offerings in 2020. We also find significant within-business variations in the effectiveness. Among the business disciplines, marketing/business administration/management information systems courses are more effective to be offered online; in contrast, computer information systems/accounting/finance courses are less effective in online instruction. This is among the first to evaluate the effectiveness of online education by academic discipline in a causal manner.
