Description

Using the system dynamics methodology, we model the effect of platform versioning on platform outcomes. We leverage extant studies on digital platforms in the Information Systems and strategic management literature to form the model's underpinnings. In general, we find that the relationship between platform versioning release cycle time and the outcomes (number of applications available and number of users on the platform) is u-shaped. The relationship is further moderated by the developers' interest in the platform's core functionality and the degree of application breakage resulting from the use of exogenous code in development. Thus, we highlight the tradeoffs of frequent platform versioning and its direct and indirect effects on developers. Finally, we discuss the implications of our findings for future research on platform versioning.

Do Frequent Platform Versions Benefit Platform Developers and Owners?
