In the digital age, information is increasingly decoupled from its physical matter, which fosters the emergence of novel service systems. This study reports on the design of a method that addresses the nature and complexity of these digitally enabled service systems and the resultant challenges for their design and development. Applying a design science research (DSR) approach, the initial design of the method is guided by the premises of Service Systems Engineering (SSE) and further interdisciplinary research fields. The resulting artifact is formatively evaluated using an appropriate evaluation strategy. The evaluation shows that the artifact broadly addresses the requirements inherent to digitally enabled service systems, but that it needs refinement in terms of its direct applicability. This paper contributes to existing knowledge by delineating the premises underlying digitization in service systems and incorporating them in a method that enables their systematic development according to the notion of SSE.
