Abstract
The German electronic health record (EHR) promises to enhance patient care and reduce healthcare costs. Nevertheless, users express concerns about data security and privacy, albeit the EHR has the highest protection standards. To mitigate these concerns, we propose improved communication strategies about privacy and security standards to increase EHR acceptance. In an online user study, N=117 participants interacted with an EHR click dummy with a transparency feature that varied systematically in terms of the length (no feature vs. long vs. short). The results show that the presence of transparency features have a positive effect on uploading behavior to the EHR. Although a short transparency feature was highly influential already, showing a long text explaining data protection in detail increased EHR uploads even further. Displaying transparency features could be a valuable measure to increase the number of EHR uploads and thus ensure the success of the EHR with its associated benefits.
