Abstract
In the dynamic domain of modern work, individuals demonstrate agency in redefining their roles, maneuvering through the dual influences of entrenched institutional logics and the emergent opportunities provided by technology. This study takes a first step toward theorizing the facilitation of job crafting by technology within these bounds. Our theoretical framework presents job crafting as a sociomaterial practice, merging personal agency with technological materiality and institutional structures. We outline our plan to empirically substantiate this theoretical framework with interpretative case studies in the German manufacturing sector, focusing on the integration of extended reality (XR) technology and its effects on job crafting and institutional structures. Our research aspires to enhance job crafting theory by dissecting the interaction between technological affordances and institutional logics, and to advance the discourse in the information systems field by examining the role of job crafting in organizational transformation amidst rapid technological innovation.
