Abstract

In the 1980s, enterprise architecture (EA) emerged to manage the complexity of IT systems within an organization. EA artifacts are the basis of EA and consist of high-level overviews of various organizational aspects and guide the organization's digital transformation. Currently, EA has grown into a mature practice. However, while contemporary organizations depend highly on their business ecosystem to succeed in digital transformation, the conceptualization of EA and, particularly, of EA artifacts predominately focus on the internal organization. This scoping review aims to create an opening for more research on 'digital transformation supporting benefits' gained from developing and using business ecosystem-oriented architectural artifacts. Literature on EA artifacts from an internally focused perspective and business ecosystem-oriented architecture were analyzed and synthesized. Based on the results, we developed a research framework to present a future research agenda to guide the modernization of the concept of EA in theory and practice.

The Supporting Role of Ecosystem-Oriented Architecture in Digital Transformations: A Scoping Review and Future Research Agenda

Literature on EA artifacts from an internally focused perspective and business ecosystem-oriented architecture were analyzed and synthesized. Based on the results, we developed a research framework to present a future research agenda to guide the modernization of the concept of EA in theory and practice.
