Abstract
Virtual teams struggle to develop good interpersonal relationships, which are essential for effective team collaboration. Whereas previous research has highlighted the effects of traditional communication tools, newer technologies, such as AI-generated messaging, remain largely unstudied. AI-generated messaging offers numerous advantages, including enhanced communication efficiency and language precision. However, AI-generated messaging was shown to adversely impact interpersonal perceptions. What is not yet understood is the mechanisms that cause this adverse effect. This study aims to fill this research gap by introducing perceived writing effort as a mediator in the relationship between AI-generated messaging and interpersonal relationships. The analysis of a sample of 108 young professionals from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland reveals that the perception of writing effort indeed mediated the negative association between AI-generated messaging and trustworthiness, interpersonal attraction, competence, and willingness to share knowledge.
