Abstract
Digital business ecosystems (DBEs) have permeated a wide variety of industries. However, despite their importance and significant potential impact, their failure rate is high, owing to the paucity of research and lack of understanding of the phenomenon. This is even more so the case for superapps, an emerging type of DBE that contains a wide range of functions within a single app platform. Using the case study of MoMopay, a Vietnamese superapp, this study aims to develop a model of superapp development. Specifically, it is found that superapps can succeed by achieving optimal distinctiveness in different phases of their development, namely: (1) launch of mobile app, (2) extending suite of services, (3) becoming a superapp, and (4) achieving a ubiquitous presence. The resulting theoretical model serves as a contribution to the DBE literature, and provides a theoretical foundation to understanding successful superapp development.
