Abstract
Voice operated devices in smart homes are getting more and more popular. To date, there are several features available for smart speakers, such as playing music, purchasing products, control devices in smart homes, deliver information, or create to-do lists. However, research on the adoption and use of smart speakers is currently scarce. It is not clear which risks or concerns users have, especially in the context of data privacy and data security. In this research, we gave smart speakers to 16 participants over two months to gain a better understanding of their use behavior as well as their concerns towards this emerging technology. The interviews showed that privacy concerns are present, but do not seem to prevent technology adoption. Security concerns, however, seem to overshadow the privacy concerns.
