Abstract

ChatGPT provides a wealth of opportunities in the classroom and is of course, a hotly debated discussion as to how to take advantage of Artificial Intelligence in an educational setting. In the Fall semester of 2023, faculty and students alike were figuring out innovative and clever uses of ChatGPT to assist in the writing of content and creation of materials for class. Faculty are often looking for novel ways to present material and research has shown that engaging students directly in the material leads to deeper learning and understanding. Providing hands-on applications in which the students can participate will enhance their learning experience. In the Fall of 2023, the MIS department was piloting a new textbook with new content for our Introductory MIS Honors class. While the textbook is delivered with case studies and in class activities, the thought was to develop deeper more engaging activities for the students. Through the use of ChatGPT and content knowledge, the instructors were able to develop several hour long, classroom activities that included: 1. Creating a blockchain – through the use of whiteboards and sticky notes, the students developed a physical blockchain. Feedback from the students was that this activity helped them to understand a complex topic that they did not previously understand. 2. Developing an Ethical Use of Technology Canvas – through the use of the Ethics canvas, ChatGPT helped develop an activity that provided students with guidance and real-world scenarios around Ethics in Management Information Systems. Feedback from the students was that this activity was engaging and assisted in their understanding of ethical issues faced by professionals. The instructors have utilized ChatGPT for a number of other activities this semester. In this TREO Talk, the instructor proposes to highlight the prompts utilized, output gathered and then implementation of the output through a hands on look at each of the activities.
