Description

Although CEOs can play an important role in influencing an organization's digital transformation, scholarly attention to measuring the exact extent of their influence is surprisingly limited. We apply the "CEO in Context" technique to digital transformation and measure the specific degree of CEO influence on digital transformation by combining data from listed companies in China from 2009 to 2022. The results show that the digital transformation effect of CEOs is typically around 20% and varies between 19%-29% with the degree of managerial autonomy of CEOs in different industries. Furthermore, our empirical analysis suggests that the appointment of a CIO weakens the digital transformation effect of the CEO, while CEOs who hold dual positions are better equipped to drive digital transformation. This research contributes to the understanding of the role of CEOs in the context of corporate digital transformation and provides valuable in-sights for firms undergoing this process.
