Description

Children are increasingly using the Internet but lack the same moral judgment as adults, and thereby are vulnerable in the online context. Internet safety for children has gained some attention in the literature, identifying the need for proactive measures and responsible practices such as digital literacy, educating children about online safety, responsible internet usage, and potential risks. However, ensuring a safe internet space for children requires a collective effort from parents, educators, technology providers, governments, and the wider community. With recent developments in AI, AI's potential for cybersecurity has been extensively studied, but not specifically regarding its application for children’s safety. Bringing literature together from the fields of AI in cybersecurity and internet safety for children, in this paper I have highlighted the possibility of using AI for the internet safety of children, e.g., content filtering and moderation, age verification, cyberbullying detection, personalised parental controls, and so forth.
