Towards Organizational Benefits of Cognitive RPA: Thematic Map and Propositions

Abstract

Cognitive Robotic Process Automation, the integration of RPA and cognitive artificial intelligence, provides new opportunities for digital transformation of organizations. However, there is a gap in the understanding of the benefits of cognitive RPA and further studies are needed. Therefore, in this paper, we aim to identify the organizational benefits of cognitive RPA. To answer the research question, a qualitative survey was conducted, including 13 respondents from seven leading RPA suppliers. The interview data was thematically analyzed and related to established knowledge of benefits of traditional rule-based RPA. The result consists of a framework including nine main benefit themes and fourteen sub-themes. The framework adds to existing knowledge about RPA benefits and provides a template for practice for evaluating investments in cognitive RPA. In a study plan for future research, we suggest that the framework is validated against a broader population, including using organizations of cognitive RPA.
