Abstract
Klaus et al. (2000), an important paper titled ‘What is ERP?’ investigated the application and importance of enterprise resource planning systems. With the dominance continuing as a leading corporate technology, enterprise systems (ES) have undergone substantial change over the past two decades. Especially attributed to the advent of cloud computing, ES are now available on ‘subscription’ basis, making it appealing to SMEs and firms in developing nations. In addition, substantial functional changes too have occurred in ES attributed to mobile computing, social media, IoT and analytics. It is therefore potent that we reassess the original question “what is an ERP (now)?” To understand the status of ES, we analyzed 73 vendor success stories and compared its findings against 79 academic publications from 2013 – 2021 published in the top IS journals.
