Abstract
Rapid conversion to digital teaching enables continuing teaching at higher education institutions (HEIs) during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, teachers encountered barriers regarding digital higher education teaching. This paper systematically approaches this issue from two perspectives by combining an international literature review and qualitative research at a German HEI. Teachers’ barriers to digital teaching in higher education during the COVID-19 pandemic are identified and categorized. The identified categories from the literature review and qualitative survey are then described and compared. Based on the identified barriers, recommendations are pointed out to help HEIs overcome them and pave the way for digital higher education teaching in the future.
