Abstract
Globally, the number of people living in large cities has risen continuously in recent years. Consequently, cities and urban areas face numerous economic, social, and ecological problems. The smart city concept is one possible answer to these problems. Smart cities try to find novel solutions for urban problems by using and developing digital technologies. Owing to this increasing use of digital technologies, cities are generating a constantly increasing amount of data. One of the technologies increasingly used by smart cities is the blockchain. This paper presents the idea of a blockchain-based approach to manage the data generated in smart cities. Based on an initial literature review, we show the potential of a holistic blockchain for data management in smart cities. As this short paper is supposed to be the first step of a design science project, we furthermore illustrate the planned further procedure of our research project.
