Abstract

With the ongoing development of digital technologies decision makers face the problem of how to easily select technologies that support their business success. If a decision maker lacks the knowledge of what a technology is capable of, it is hardly possible to identify the problems in the decision maker’s organization that a technology might solve. With a self-description of digital technology, which we call problem space, the decision makers are supported so that they can identify technologies and their related problems easier. We conceptualize a Problem Space Mapping Framework (PSMF) that brings together the terms of technology with the terms of business to enable managers to reason by analogy so that they can find problems within their social systems. The PSMF comprises the concepts necessary to develop the problem space of a digital technology.
