Abstract
Health information technology (HIT), can be an effective approach to emancipating and empowering different participating groups (patients, health care providers, and health professionals) involved in the healthcare process and can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare. Therefore, it is necessary to understand HIT’s empowerment process and outcome for various participating groups, at a more holistic and systematic level. In this study, we conduct a systematic literature review of digital empowerment in healthcare. We systematically review all selected literature based on types of HIT and empowerment objects. Through the systematic literature review, a holistic research model is proposed for future research, and directions for future study are also identified.
