Abstract

How to effectively maintain patients’ and physicians’ voluntary and continuous value creation to mHealth services is a critical issue. Based on existing literature, we develop a theoretical framework that elucidates the mechanisms for value co-creation of mHealth services through building an empowerment cycle. The cycle involves both empowerment mechanisms for two critical actors in mHealth services. For patients, the empowerment process proposes the two empowering enablers (personalization and interactivity) created by mHealth services can positively influence patients’ continuance to use through psychological empowerment. For physicians, the reverse empowerment process proposes patient empowering behavior has a positive relationship with physician knowledge contribution through proactive motivational states. We develop a set of propositions based on the empowerment cycle. This study contributes to the literature on empowerment theory, mHealth and provides implications for practices.
