Abstract
Digital innovation provides manifold opportunities and challenges. Companies need to master digital innovation cycles faster and leverage the increasing amount of available data. In this regard, artificial intelligence (AI) is of great interest, providing applications and tools to support humans and to enable more data-driven, customer-centric innovation. To date, however, the potential of AI for digital innovation processes remains poorly understood and needs to be further investigated. Thus, we developed a comprehensive framework for investigating the potential of AI along the steps of the digital innovation process. Drawing from the concept of cognitive skills and relating them to digital innovation activities as a theoretical lens, we used an initial survey with innovation experts and a focus group discussion with AI experts to assess the potential of AI along the steps of the digital innovation process. Our work contributes to the descriptive knowledge at the interface between digital innovation and AI
