Abstract
This paper examines how three organisations adapted Information System (IS) Process Innovations (ISPIs) using a sample of 59 ISPI adaptations over a period of four decades following roughly Friedman’s and Cornford’s categorisation of IS development eras. We analyse the dependencies between the gatekeepers, and their variation over time. Our analysis shows that before the IS department outsourcing in 1984, IS project steering groups and IS project groups, the end-users and the professional in-house experts, as well as the IS design groups and their foremen were dependent on one another being the main gatekeepers deciding over ISPI adaptations. After outsourcing, the IS vendors adapted ISPIs independently and used them in mutual IS projects with an IS client, whereas the IS client adapted the IS vendors’ ISPIs.
