Abstract

There are various kinds of studies about characteristics of CMC (Computer-Mediated Communication). But many of them are experimental studies and compare CMC with Face-to-Face (FTF) communication. Therefore, people in each condition for the experiment (CMC or FTF) are allowed to have communication using only one medium. However, in actual work conditions, people use not only CMC or FTF but both media according to time and circumstances. Therefore, to understand a CMC role in actual work conditions, we study the conditions in which CMC and FTF are coexisting as well as comparing both media. This study aims to clarify the impact of CMC and FTF on actual organizations and the role of those media in the organizations. Data are gathered using questionnaires from 335 CMC system users in five Japanese companies. Data are analyzed and results of the analysis clarify that, under actual conditions: (1) people tend to choose CMC for exchanging simple information and FTF for discussing complicated problems and, (2) using CMC and FTF for discussion enhances job satisfaction rather than using one media.
