Abstract

Generative AI presents a critical challenge to conventional performance management. As output metrics soar, the default organizational response of rewarding efficiency with increased workloads creates a "productivity trap" that undermines the very innovation and engagement it seeks to encourage. This paper argues that existing reward systems, optimized for a pre-AI era, are fundamentally misaligned with the nature of human-AI collaboration and actively exacerbate this problem. To address this, we develop a novel, multi-dimensional framework of AI-centric rewards. Our framework integrates Financial, Social, Experiential, and Structural reward mechanisms designed to promote motivation, incentivize critical thinking, and reward the sophisticated human-AI synergy. This work provides a new vocabulary for leaders to design more resilient and motivating systems and sets a holistic agenda for future research on how to value human expertise in an increasingly automated world.
