Abstract

The use or appropriation of academic terms from one area to another is common in academic research in a wide variety of areas, including information systems. The term affordances is a case in point that has attracted the attention of researchers and has been widely used in the development of research in both information systems and other areas. Despite its extensive application, studies show that it has been used in an ambiguous and confusing way, without a specific definition, and attempts to determine not only the term, but also ways of doing research using it, have been proposed. This article, based on a narrative review, seeks to contribute to this debate by showing that, in addition to defining the term from a specific perspective, the area can benefit from various ontological perspectives that escape the apparent duality that has emerged in the discussion of the term in information systems.
