Abstract

Understanding the needs of a metropolis and its inhabitants involves analyzing a multitude of data related to its dynamics. However, aggregating multiple complex data sets from heterogeneous sources and various levels of granularity poses a challenge for researchers undertaking this task. This study utilized public data from official sources related to favelas, public safety and crime, public health, education, income, and age demographics of neighborhoods in the capital city of Paraná, in Brazil. The aim was to understand the relationship between these factors. A socioeconomic vulnerability index for the neighborhoods of Curitiba was generated using the statistical method of principal component analysis. The findings revealed that crime data have the greatest weight in defining the vulnerability of a neighborhood in the city, which can provide significant support for local administration's decision-making processes in their efforts to reduce inequalities that might otherwise go unnoticed.
